A Holiday Note From the Studio

Rosebud Gallery, San Francisco, November 2025

As the holidays start rolling in and everything feels a little cozier, I’ve been thinking a lot about this past year, what I created, what I shared, and all the people I have met in the creative world. This time of year is so busy, but I wanted to take the time to reflect and show a bit more about what has been happening for Spiderfish Studios and me.

This year has been so fulfilling for me and unexpected. I made new work I’m really proud of, and reworked old ideas into something fresh. And now, creating during the holidays just feels different, a little warmer, and a little more creative and experimental.

I have a lot to be proud of, but here’s one of the biggest highlights for me:

I was part of five gallery shows this year. Five!

I’m still so surprised that in my first year of pursuing art professionally that I can say that. One gallery is in San Jose, one in Palo Alto, and three in San Francisco. I loved meeting the other artists and gallery owners and just nerding out about art with others who love it. It’s my happy place. Seeing my work on a wall next to artists I admire, and watching others connect with something I made never gets old. I’m genuinely so proud.

And I wanted to give a huge thank you to everyone who chose a piece from me this year, whether it was an original, a print, or something small. Every purchase gives me more confidence to keep going and build on what I have been creating over the last year. It’s so exciting to me when someone sees my work and decides they want to see it in their home every day. I feel like loving a piece of art enough to buy it is a rare connection, and I’m always to excited to see it when it happens. I never take it for granted. Also, there were so many collectors this year, which is something I’m so grateful for. I see it as a sign that what I’m doing is really connecting with others, and I love that.

Just a few of my wonderful 2025 Collectors.

So as we wrap up the year, I just want to say thank you for being here, for supporting this studio of mine, for sharing my work, for showing up to events, and for making space in your homes for something I created.

More new pieces are coming soon, and I’m really excited about what’s next.

🎄Wishing you a warm, cozy, creative holiday season.

-Jen

Big Fall Catch-Up: Features, Art Sales, Collections, and Comforts

It has been a minute since I gave a much-needed update! I have a lot of thoughts, and I’m going to lay them out for you here. I’m going to be covering my recent blog and magazine feature, my pop-ups, my new collections, and my hopes for all those reading this.

My Latest Features

I was featured in my first art magazine! Specifically in Issue #33 of Artistcloseup Contemporary Art Magazine that came out in September! Then, in late September, they also featured my interview in their blog.

Collections of Personal Comfort

I have been releasing a lot of new collections lately for the Fall season as a way of releasing some of my ideas that have come to me as the weather has begun to change. I notice that the collections have a connected theme of comfort for me, which makes sense for cozy season. I will show you a few pieces from each!

Spooky Season’s Critters Collection

Collection 1: Spooky Seasons’ Critters

The first new series was Spooky Seasons’ Critters, a collection of animals that I have loved while growing up. I used to check out library books of my favorite animals and read about them and print out photos of them on long rainy weekends to look at. I went through periods where I would be obsessed with a certain kind of animal, bats, tarantellas, cats, guppies, Devonian Period sharks, seahorses…you get the idea. I have always been curious, learning about unique creatures when I could. This part of me also inspired the name of Spiderfish Studios, which aims to celebrate the differences in abilities and strengths that can be found in each of us.

Collection 2: Fall Textures and Beyond

The Fall Textures and Beyond collection was made while processing the passing of a family member in September who was an artist. She sculpted geometric marble sculptures and loved bright colors. I find this collection feeling like her to me.

In addition, this was my first collection experimenting with raw, untreated canvas. I left a lot of the canvas showing to showcase the texture and natural colors. It grounds and softens the more vibrant, abstract images to create a nice balance.

A Balance of Sales and Rest

I’m also so happy to report that my collectors have been so supportive of my work, especially the last two months! I’m running so low on prints, ran out of one of my stickers, and have sold many of my originals. Not to mention that each new collection seems to do better than the last!

I really feel so lucky. It’s amazing how people look at what I make and decide to take it home and look at it every day. Every time, I love seeing who the piece goes home with.

My in-person art pop-ups have been a huge success, and I have had many recently. I enjoyed meeting everyone so much, and now I’m looking forward to taking things easy for a bit to read, paint, and drink all the matcha lattes I can handle. I’m excited to report that I now have a proper matcha mixing bowl and whisk, making my matcha drinks actually taste respectable now!

Collection 3: Elements

The Elements collection is my most luxurious offering yet. Abstract takes on earth, wind, water, and fire are the focus of this series, and it’s all about color, form, and texture. These 12x12 acrylic pieces are painted on raw canvas, and the acrylic ink bleeds in like watercolors, creating a softness not usually associated with the medium. These vibrant, calming, sculptural art pieces are incredibly elegant and sophisticated, with the authenticity of the raw canvas anchoring each one. It’s my favorite series yet and was so relaxing to make. The creation of each piece was highly intuitive, and the process felt like a calm meditation, bringing a lot of clarity for me in its simplicity.

Art and Comforts

Finally, I just wanted to end on a note, speaking from the heart on creating thoughtfully designed spaces and choosing the right art for your home. Choosing art is a very personal process. It takes careful consideration of what will bring you joy, introspection, energy, inspiration, or whatever it is you are hoping to feel in your space. Art can make you feel so many different things. I personally am drawn to a mix of calm and whimsy.

Make your space feel like you, and let it nudge you into the headspace you wish to be in. Art is there to enrich our lives, so choose some for your spaces and let them work their magic.

Out: A New Collection

I haven’t posted for a bit, and I wanted to give a bit of an update on my latest work! It’s a 15-piece collection that I’ve been slowly rolling out to my Collector’s List and at pop-up events.

My Work

My goal is to make unique, soulful, original artwork accessible to all. Through making art affordable, I hope to encourage everyone to curate collections that resonate with them deeply. I view the act of curating a meaningful art collection as important because I believe artwork contributes something uniquely beneficial to our well-being, and everyone deserves to benefit from it.

The Latest Inspiration

This latest collection is called Out. It’s inspired by mid-century modern minimalism, combining warmth with clean lines and timelessness. Some are figurative, while most are abstract, and some live somewhere in between (which I love). They are deeply expressive and come with a fantastically weird story behind the expression.

Storytime:

So I got locked outside. For an entire day. I went out to spray fixative on some art (very smelly - definitely not supposed to inhale), and a large canvas slipped behind the sliding door as I closed it behind me, locking me out without my phone. It was a beautiful day, and thank goodness I stored some of my art supplies out there. So for an entire day, I worried about being trapped outside with the fumes I had sprayed while I sketched and waited for my husband to rescue me.

That’s where the subject matter comes into play. The cigarette? Inspired by breathing in chemicals that I was supposed to flee inside to avoid. The pinecone? It was out there beside me. The abstracts? A mix of frustration and play while outside against my will.

Eventually, my husband came home and freed me. I went inside, watched Sex and the City for emotional healing purposes, and, reunited with the rest of my supplies, added finishing touches to these pieces.

The Artwork Details

  • Solid oak and walnut frames that are 9 1/4 x 11 3/4 inches, a nod to the outdoor world I was part of while creating them. The frames come ready to hang or prop up on a shelf and come with protective glass over each piece.

  • Special acid-free mat and backing, preventing any yellowing of the art paper used, perfectly preserving each piece.

  • Acid-free linen tape to secure each piece to the mat

  • Hand-signed and made with care from start to finish by me

My First San Francisco Gallery Exhibition: Far Out Gallery

I’m so excited to share that my latest work, Gracefully Disturbed, is now exhibiting at Far Out Gallery in San Francisco! This marks a big moment for me. Growing up, I was taken to the art museums in San Francisco and I would enjoy every moment of it. Now that I have been given space to show my art and contribute to the art conversation there, it feels incredible. It’s such an honor to have been welcomed into the art scene that I have grown up admiring.

Far Out Gallery, San Francisco

The Piece

Gracefully Disturbed is a 36×24" acrylic painting I created during a time of challenge. The piece reflects a need to carve out space for calm during chaos. It’s layered, textural, and full of movement. Like much of my work, it explores contrast.

Cascading drips move down the large canvas, reflecting on a grand scale the challenge of change, interrupting an otherwise calm scene of soft loops with graceful movement. I wanted to make something that felt honest, full of feeling and visual weight, yet still hopeful. It speaks to the strength it takes to pull through a rough spot with grace.

Reframing What We Notice: The Art of Spiderfish Studios

At Spiderfish Studios, I make art that observes curiosity, whimsy, and contradiction. I feel this makes sense, as this is also a reflection of how I see myself and how I view the world around me.

To translate my thoughts, I work with bold color, layered texture, and a range of materials, including ones that are often overlooked, like cardboard, to explore themes of transformation and worth. My background in environmental studies shows up in quiet ways: in the themes of permanence and disposability, in the way materials are reused, and in how I honor what’s usually unseen.

A Cohesive Style That Welcomes Variety

While my subjects vary from expressive figures to koi fish, pizza slices, lemons, and imagined worlds, my visual language stays grounded. I use strong shape, movement, bold colors, and emotion as anchors. Whether abstract or figurative, each piece carries a certain energy: a blend of playfulness and introspection, just like me.

What ties it all together isn’t the subject; my work is about noticing what’s around me.

Small Scale, Big Story

Many of my original paintings are 4×4" miniature, intimate works that are collectible and personal. I don’t treat them as sketches or starters. They are complete. From hand-sculpted frames to layered finishes, they’re designed with the same care I’d give a large canvas. The size invites closeness and a moment of pause. I also feel these pieces allow for a much more accessible price point for many, welcoming more collectors looking to curate amazing spaces for themselves with original works.

Material as Message

Using reclaimed or everyday materials is a conscious choice. I want to challenge what we define as “valuable.” A piece of cardboard can carry meaning for the viewer by speaking to resilience, resourcefulness, and the beauty of the overlooked. I make pieces that don’t need to shout to be seen, and their message still stays with you.

Join Me

If my work speaks to something in you, either a feeling, a memory, or a sense of curiosity, I invite you to bring that energy into your space. Each piece I make is one-of-a-kind, created with care and intention, meant to be lived with, noticed, and returned to. Whether you're starting your collection or adding something new to your space, you're not just buying a painting, you're supporting an artist who believes beauty can be found in the unexpected, the odd, and the whimsical.

Take a look around. See what pulls you in. And if it does, trust that feeling. It’s probably meant for you.

My May: A Gallery Exhibition, My Wedding, First Art Fair

The last few weeks have been filled with new experiences for me both personally and for Spiderfish Studios! Let me get you all caught up now that I’ve been able to catch my breath!

A Gallery Exhibition

In the beginning of the month I attended the Pacific Art League’s gallery exhibition. It was extra special for me because my digital art piece, Pose, was selected by a jury to be part of the exhibit. Thank you to all those who came to support and admire the work of local artists! It was an evening to remember.

I’m also thrilled that Pose won a People’s Choice Award, as one of the pieces voted on the most by the visiting public as their favorite in the exhibit. It’s a huge honor, and I’m super grateful for the support for this piece, as it was the first I ever made for Spiderfish Studios. Pose, is there through June 24th in Palo Alto, CA, so you can still check it out!

I Got Married!

The first part of the month we were busy getting ready for our wedding in Punta Mita, Mexico. Yes, we got married! It was beautiful and everything we had hoped for, and the day also served as a 10 year anniversary celebration. After the wedding, I was exhausted, and I later found out why.

COVID

After moving over to the town Sayulita to enjoy a few more days in Mexico, I started not feeling so great. My skin was super sensitive, chills, congestion, and I had muscle aches and more. After a few days of it getting worse, it was clear we had to go home early. When we got home, I tested positive for COVID for the first time. I feel super lucky that I didn’t get sick until after our wedding!

The Box SF Art Fair

While resting up I started prepping for my first art fair! I was so excited to see the in-person response to my work. At The Box SF, pieces found homes with some wonderful Bay Area collectors and I enjoyed meeting so many people who are passionate about artwork. My fellow vendors were so fun to hang out with and get to know better. I know we will keep in touch.

Spring News!

The weather is getting warmer and inspiration is in the air! I’m creating lots of new pieces and have been collecting new pieces to add to my own collection. I find nothing refreshes a space quite like a good Spring cleaning, moving around the furniture, and adding new life to your space with new artwork on the walls. Wouldn’t you agree?

In the spirit of Spring newness, I have added lots of new mini pieces to my website to offer to those looking for something to spark some fresh joy in their space. What I like about minis is that they are a much more affordable way for someone to dip their toes in the world of handmade art pieces. I think once someone starts to buy original art it’s certainly hard to go back. They provide a space with an energy and luxuriousness that is hard to put a finger on. It’s just special. I find that it connects us to another human, knowing that they took the time to dream up and make what we are looking at.

4×4 inch Sushi Painting

Also, I’m excited to announce that one of the pieces from my figure drawing series has been selected by a juried panel to be exhibited at the Pacific Art League in Palo Alto and will be up for sale there from most of May-June. This is a great way to see work from local artists in the Bay Area up close! I invite you to view my website for more information.

Enjoy the beautiful weather!
